Rest in power and fly high, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela
‘She who tries’ was revolutionary, courageous, unrelenting, fearless and forever strong in her convictions against #apartheid and racial injustices. In the face of what seemed impossible, she stood firm – especially when wronged, but also when some considered wrongful – and despite her being detained, tortured, arrested, held in solitary confinement for over a year and even exiled, she remained defiant and unwavering for the movement.
Her #activism and struggle for #equality distinctly came at immense personal costs, but it is these same sacrifices and her resolute commitment to racial emancipation that made her one of South Africa’s greatest freedom fighters. Her fierce independence as an activist led to the very freedoms we have come to know, and for that there can be no greater respect and gratitude.
Turbulent, yes, but truly transformative, Nomzamo, Mother Of The Nation; may your memory be honoured by the torch that must now be carried forward. And we pray that your family may find solace and comfort in this.
