We Must Stand Together

Thurs 10th May 2018

@Footscray Community Arts Centre | 45 Moreland St, Footscray, Victoria

Federation of Community Legal Centres (FCLC) are working for a community that is fair, inclusive and thriving; where every person belongs and can learn, grow, heal, participate, and be heard.

But it’s tough. Increasingly, we find ourselves up against populist policy-makers, systemic racism, and entrenched economic and social injustice.

None of us can beat these forces alone.

That’s why they’re inviting you to We Must Stand Together: A forum to plan advocacy and campaigning on criminal justice issues, and help shape a strong collective response to the racist political and media agenda that threatens our progress, particularly in the lead-up to the Victorian election.

We Must Stand Together will involve a mix of plenary style sessions and workshops on issues including youth justice, police accountability and the age of criminal responsibility. They’ll also discuss ways to tackle the systemic racism that underpins the vilification of particular communities, particularly black African communities in Victoria, and the continued overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the justice system.

Forum participants and speakers will range from NGOs, to community legal centres, social service organisations, to community members and activists who are fighting systemic discrimination and injustice at the coalface, every day.

By coming together to share our perspectives, stories, skills, plans and experiences, we can strengthen our collective power to achieve the changes we seek in the world.

This is an event in which the voices of people who are directly affected by racism and criminalisation will be prioritised. It is also an opportunity for other influential and powerful community advocates to share information and coordinate together. For these reasons, attendance by members of the police force is not appropriate. If you work for the government or for a political party or media outlet we ask that you attend in a personal capacity only.
